A Little Perspective on the Retention Fight

Of all the campaign finance reports, the media takeaway from the filing deadline was that Gov. Sam Brownback's PAC, Roadmap PAC, donated money to Kansans for Life (KFL).

Guys, I don't want to startle or alarm anyone, but the Governor is pro-life. As far as I can tell, it's not a secret and it never has been. So, when Brownback's PAC raises a crazy amount of cash and gives most of it to KFL, it's about as shocking as Kathleen Sebelius giving cash to Planned Parenthood--which um, happened--to the tune of $10,000.

The most irritating part of the breathless stories about Brownback giving money to an organization he's made no secret of supporting is that the stories are subtly spun to suggest that the Governor just gets to pack the Kansas Supreme Court with his BFFs, should the judicial retention elections go the way of reasonable common sense people. Head desk.

So, allow me to clarify, AGAIN: Brownback doesn't just get to pick his friends. He has to choose between three people from a list given to him by a bunch of unelected lawyers. It's the dumbest judicial selection system in the history of humanity, but it's the one we're stuck with.

Quite frankly, there aren't enough breathless stories about that laughable committee and its past court-packing efforts, but the media may have taken notice. In today's news: A member of the nominating panel member, Natalie Haag, is campaigning to retain the justices. Haag told the Associated Press that she has sent hundreds of emails backing the justices and Kansans for Fair Courts, a group campaigning to keep the justices. She's doing this, "because the process worked."

If that's not the most self-interested statement in the history of the world, I don't know what is. Let me check my notes. Yep. Most self-interested statement in history.

And here's the nugget left on the cutting room floor of this charade: Natalie Haag is Congresswoman Lynn Jenkins' sister. Oh Republicans. Just one giant circular firing squad.
